Working
onboard the ship had wonderful bonuses like meeting Brendan Fraser who
boarded the MS Song Of Flower with his parents for some R&R before his
"George Of The Jungle" shoot. I was also priveleged to meet the wonderful
Eli Wallach who told me stories about Marilyn Monroe, Cliff Robertson who
came onbaord to write his book, Nelson Riddle, Jr. who took over his
father's band, Margaret O'Brien who was as wholesome as the littel Margaret
we know on the screen, many screen greats who came onboard to lecture or to
rest, like the late Vincent Price, Jane Wyman, Celeste Holm, etc. I also met
Gary Player who graced us with his presence onboard Royal Viking ships.

Notice: This webpage is a personal column. I am not a job agency or an employer. I am
here to share information that I feel could be very useful to people looking to work
onboard cruise ships.
So you want to work onboard Cruise Ships? What
to expect... : If you want the job of a main lounge
act, or the cabaret act, or organizing a dance band, etc. first consider what you think
your chances are of getting jobs in the land-based entertainment field. Alternatively, if
you just wanted a job that was entertainment-related say, in the Casino or in the Gift
Shop, what do you think your chances are of getting those jobs on land?
Cruise ship employment has a fast turnover rate. People who take
jobs onboard the Cruise ships for the most part do not contemplate being onboard as a
lifelong career. Most of the entertainers and staff I have met are usually after the
experience, some money and most of all to travel the world.
Cruise lines are constantly hiring. The Entertainment department
most of the time is handled by an outside agency nowadays. So, if you are an entertainer
of an agent for a band or an act, your best bet is to contact reputable agencies that
focus on Cruise line entertainment. Contacting the cruise line directly will just give you
a headache and most usually end up with nothing except the advice to go and see the ship's
exclusive entertainment supplier. After having said that, there are always exceptions to
the rule - like connections, connections, and connections.
In my experience and observation through almost 14 years onboard
Cruise ships, most applications that are mailed to agencies or to the ship are thrown out
almost immediately if the promo material is not catchy or attractive enough. In other
words, if you expect the booking agencies for Cruise ships, or the Cruise Ship
entertainment department to get all excited about your CD sent in a plain manila envelope
then you need to learn how to Jazz up your publicity material.
If getting jobs on land does not scare you then getting jobs onboard Cruise ships will
not faze you either. They are almost just the same.
What's so great about working
on cruise ships anyway?
FREE ACCOMMODATION & BOARD
Entertainers are usually provided accommodation; all expenses paid travel to and from
destination and salary commensurate to the entertainer's stature. Non-Entertainer Crew
Members are provided with free accommodation, board and some ships even have relaxation
facilities for the crew, including crew night clubs and gyms. As a rule, Cruise companies
also generally provide you with a free medical insurance and great travel allowances after
a qualifying period. Holiday discounts and family cruises are sometimes offered in some
Cruise lines.
TAX - FREE EARNINGS!
Expect to earn anywhere between US$1,550.00 - 5,000.00 per month (sometimes plus tips
and/or commissions) Depending on the company and your position. Entertainers normally earn
more than your usual onboard jobs. One does not have to pay tax on earnings due to the
fact that majority of Cruise companies have their vessels registered in so called
"tax-free countries" usually Panama or Bahamas. Sailing in International waters
also permits such tax luxury.
SEE THE WORLD FOR FREE
There are over 520 different ports and locations regularly included in various cruise
Ship's itineraries. I have been around the world at least 3 times and enjoyed every bit of
it. Cruise ships visit any imaginable location around the world. After a period of loyalty
service to a company, crew members can generally ask for transfer to other ships in the
company's fleet that are cruising in different regions and visiting other exotic ports!
JOBS AND
CAREERS FOR EVERYONE...
Each cruise ship employs anywhere from 250 to 1'500 staff. Whether your professional
background is in Hospitality, Retail, Customer related or any other Service Industry, you
will find that there is a great amount of employment opportunities in your related field
of experience or interest.
