Amapola Cabase, who developed into one of the Philipines top singers, is now working with Berne Hal-Mann's swinging combo in the Kahala Hilton's Maile Lounge.

There aren't many places in town where fine jazz, good dance music plus a top female vocalist are featured. But the Maile has it all and crowds have been flocking to the spot.

A strong addition to Hal-Mann's group is Gabe Baltazar who formerly was Stan Kenton's lead saxophonist. Gabe also plays flute and vibes. Others in the group are Augie Rey on percussion and vocals, bassist Randy Aloya and drummer Patrick Sombrio.

"I started playing piano in my dad's band when I was nine years old." Amapola said.

When I was 11, I wanted to sing in his band but my Dad woudln't let me. So I quit his group and sang with another band. We did so well that he got me back."

Amapola fits perfectly with Hal-Mann's group. She has been associated with music just about all her life. Her dad is a composer arranger and can play 28 instruments.

"Good musicians are a dime a dozen in the pHilippines." she said. "I would like to see him come to Hawaii and work. People really appreciate talent here."

"Dad got tired of leading his group so I formed my own band and begged him to play with us, and he did. We were together for two years. Since the musicians and I coudl play various instruments, we would change off during a show. Time for a break meant nothing. We would just keep playing.

Amapola started learning classical piano when she was four years old. She is also competent on guitar, bass, organ, vibes and accordion. Composing and arranging are among her musical talents.

"Before I came to the Kahala Hilton I couldn't get a job. Since coming into the Maile lOunge and getting known I now have much to do.
